Boto, also known as the pink river dolphin, is a famous legend from the Amazon region. According to the story, this mysterious river animal has the magical ability to transform into a handsome young man.

On warm nights, especially during festivals and celebrations in riverside villages, Boto leaves the water and takes on human form. As a man, he appears as a charming and elegant figure, usually dressed in white and always wearing a hat. The hat is essential as it hides the breathing hole on the top of his head, the mark that reveals his true identity as a dolphin.

In his human form, Boto is a persuasive and captivating seducer. He dances, plays music, and easily attracts the attention of young women at village gatherings. Many are enchanted by his charm and fall in love with him without realizing who he truly is.

Before sunrise, however, the mysterious stranger disappears. He returns to the river and transforms back into the pink dolphin, leaving no trace behind.

In many Amazonian communities, when a woman becomes pregnant and the father is unknown, people sometimes say that the child is “the son of the Boto.” Because of this, the legend became closely associated with seduction, mystery, and the magical presence believed to inhabit the rivers of the Amazon.
